Tolling engineering support

Tolling design and procurement support for agencies and integrators

Twenty-five years of lane, plaza, host and back-office experience, available to toll authorities, their consultants and the integrators that deliver their systems. We design, document, test and troubleshoot. We do not compete as a toll system integrator.

Services

What we do for toll programs

  • Requirements review and traceability matrices; RFP packages, scopes of services, technical attachments and evaluation support for replacement toll collection systems
  • Roadside system design: gantry equipment layouts, cabinet and conduit typicals, bills of materials, power and load calculations, structural inputs, maintenance-of-traffic planning
  • Host system design: fully redundant architectures to 99.999% availability, dual-site failover, cloud backup alternatives, multi-vendor BOMs for supply-chain redundancy, MTBF analysis, data-center rack drawings
  • Pre-assembly and configuration of lane and plaza cabinets in our Northern Virginia lab, then on-site installation oversight
  • Initial qualification, factory and site acceptance testing; test case development and execution
  • Troubleshooting of lane, plaza and host subsystems; back-office interface and interface control document analysis
  • 6C and legacy AVI transition planning, ALPR and pay-by-plate, gantry constraint analysis from drawing reviews
  • Camera-vision secondary counts for revenue audit and classification validation
Running a system today? Troubleshooting, overflow maintenance, legacy reverse engineering and real-time monitoring for new and legacy toll systems are covered under toll system engineering and technical support.

Past performance

Toll programs we have supported

Express lanes sign gantry with toll equipment

OCTA SR-91 and I-405 Express Lanes, for Kapsch TrafficCom

Led the roadside system design team for an open-road lanes retrofit, then the design of a fully redundant 99.999%-availability host, delivering every milestone on an expedited schedule.

Toll lane cabinet power supplies and I/O controllers

Florida's Turnpike open road tolling, for Xerox/Conduent

Roadside cabinets and gantry equipment pre-assembled in our Northern Virginia lab, a proof-of-concept system operational in under 45 days, and zero errors across 280 initial qualification test scenarios in two days of continuous testing.

Questions

Tolling FAQ

Are you a toll system integrator?

No. Toll system integration contracts are too large for a firm our size, and we do not compete for them. We support toll agencies and their consultants, and we work for the major integrators as an engineering bench: design, documentation, testing, installation oversight and troubleshooting.

Which toll technologies do you work with?

Open road tolling and conventional lanes, 6C and legacy AVI protocols, automatic license plate recognition and pay-by-plate, roadside and plaza hosts, lane controllers and cabinets, back-office interfaces and customer service center operations. Our vision-based secondary counts add an independent audit layer.

Can you help write our RFP?

Yes. We develop requirements and traceability matrices, scopes of services, technical attachments, gantry and site constraint analyses, cybersecurity requirements and evaluation support for replacement toll collection systems and related procurements.

Ready to scope it?

Send us the corridor, the site count and the problem. We will come back with an approach, not a brochure.
