The Client
The client is a large government contractor in partnership with a public agency deploying Connected Vehicle (CV) and pedestrian safety applications on a city bus network.
The Challenge
The CV-based pedestrian safety prototype is a new system that combines various sensors, communication, and processing equipment to advise bus drivers of potential collisions with adjacent objects and pedestrians. The new system introduces an in-vehicle display that will show drivers alerts and warnings depending on the location of the potential hazard. Before the prototype is expanded, ITS Roads is assessing system performance, including technical, safety, and financial performance, as well as user friendliness.
The Solution
ITS Roads created a comprehensive plan to evaluate all aspects of the system based on customer objectives. Through iterative development with stakeholders, ITS Roads validated the evaluation approach and defined all metrics. The evaluation plan was based on a full system review, including roadside sensors, human machine interfaces, and backend data processing and storage. Evaluation metrics include false alarm rate, collision reduction, cost savings, reduction of service disruptions, improved mobility and reliability, as well as driver acceptance.
