The Client
The client is a large municipal public agency in the fastest growing city in the country with significant fiber resources and an interest in new technology.
The Challenge
The agency has established a multi-disciplinary working group for integrating transportation and information technology (IT) operations to leverage new technology and improve regional safety and mobility. Before adopting new technologies, the agency needed to first take an inventory of all network assets and bandwidth utilization city-wide. This would help identify potential safety and security risks associated with system changes and new functionality, and address the question of whether or not the city could support the exponential increase of data associated with a Connected Vehicle data-sharing environment. Subsequently, the agency needed a plan to move forward in a manner that was cost effective and enabled continuous system growth.
The Solution
ITS Roads conducted a full assessment of the regional Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) network to identify gaps in the gigabit network and potential exposure to cyberattacks. Working with staff from all relevant agency stakeholders, ITS Roads built a roadmap of recommended improvements to solidify the agency’s core network, address gaps in technology support and response times, and facilitate new growth without increasing system vulnerability to hacking. Additionally, ITS Roads recommended and is helping the city instrument a “Living Lab” downtown where they could easily test new technologies before large-scale deployment.
